what culture looks like at Sensient

what defines culture?

Culture isn’t just one thing at Sensient. It’s shaped by the people who work here, the way teams collaborate, and the standards they hold themselves to every day. At Sensient, we foster a professional environment with a formal dress code and a strong in-office presence because we believe meaningful connections, shared experiences, and collaboration spark innovation, support career growth, and contribute to long-term success.

We spoke to two employees, Kevin Barasa, Senior Sales Manager, and Lisha Daniel, Technical Director, to understand their experiences of how our culture shows up in practice, from ownership and development to how teams work together to deliver for customers.

How would you describe the culture here?

Kevin: Sensient is a place where people who want to make an impact can thrive. Everything we do is centered around our customers; they’re our North Star. When our customers succeed, we succeed, and that mindset shapes how we work every day.

Can you share a moment that reflects this culture in action?

Lisha: Early in my Sensient career, I was running time consuming microbial growth experiments. As a junior scientist, I was encouraged to challenge the way we were doing these, identify a better solution, and build the case for automating much of the process. We implemented it, improving efficiency and freeing up so much more time for higher value work and better customer support. That early experience showed me that at Sensient, ideas can come from anyone, no matter where you are in your career.

What makes Sensient different from other companies?

Kevin: There’s a real focus on continuous improvement and finding a way to say 'yes'. You don’t hear “this is how we’ve always done it.” When there’s a challenge, people look for solutions, and ideas come from everywhere. It creates a culture where everyone feels they can contribute.

How has our culture supported your career?

Lisha: Sensient has challenged me to think beyond science. It has taught me to lead with curiosity, embrace ownership, empower others and create innovation that delivers real business impact.  From growing beneficial microbes to crafting bold flavors, I’ve had the opportunity to grow across different businesses, functions, and leadership roles while broadening my perspective every step of the way.

How do the six competencies show up in your day-to-day work?

Kevin: They guide how I approach my work every day.

    • The first, being results-driven, isn’t just about winning business; it’s about delivering meaningful outcomes, whether that’s securing a project or helping my team achieve their goals.
    • The second, having an entrepreneurial mindset, means taking ownership, stepping in to solve problems rather than waiting to be asked.
    • Develop self & others” is about staying curious and continuously learning, whether that’s new market trends, products, or ways of working, and then sharing that knowledge with the team.
    • Being customer-focused (our fourth competency) means understanding what each customer needs and responding in the right way, whether that’s with speed, support, or technical expertise.
    • Collaboration” underpins everything. None of this happens in isolation, so building strong relationships across teams is essential.
    • And ultimately, “know your job” means understanding both the customer and the complexity of what we offer, and knowing when to bring in the right expertise.

What keeps you at Sensient?

Lisha: You’re constantly learning, stretching, and discovering capabilities you didn’t know you had. It’s a place where you can grow as a leader, develop others, and work alongside incredibly talented people who care deeply about customers and the impact of what we create.
